To kick off our Black History Month celebrations, on February 2, 2018, our 5th and 6th grade choir students were treated with a performance by Shades of Yale, an acapella group from Yale University. As a group that celebrates the music of the African Diaspora, Shades of Yale performed arrangements of songs such as “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which is often referred to as the Black American National Anthem and “We Shall Overcome,” an anthem of the Civil Rights Movement.
During the visit, Shades of Yale and Conservatory Lab had an opportunity to exchange some music. Shades of Yale taught our students “No Mirror’s in my Nana’s House” by Ysaye M. Barnell. In return, our 5th and 6th grade choir, led by resident artist Gerami Groover, invited Shade of Yale to join them in a performance of the spiritual “Oh Lord Done Done.”
